Eureka was first called home by Shawnee Native Americans on the banks of the Meramec River.
In 1858, the village of Eureka was settled along the path of the Pacific Railroad.
Eureka received its name due to railroad builders exclaiming “Eureka!” when they first saw the land and how easy it would be to lay railroad on it.
In 1890, some of the notable establishments within the county’s limits included: a blacksmith, saloon, wagon maker, post office, and a Freemason’s Hall.
Eureka’s annual budget was approximately $3,400 in 1954 and now rests at over $4,000,000 today.
