Des Peres Trivia
Despite its French name, Des Peres (pronounced “Duh – Pear”) was formed largely by German immigrants. In fact, the name means “of the fathers.”
In 1701, Jesuit missionaries settled on the banks of the Mississippi river. This settlement would ultimately become to be known as Des Peres, long before the city was officially formed in 1934.
Due to the city’s location on a river, trappers, hunters, and all kinds of other professions frequented the city, leading to its growth.
In 1848, Des Peres received an official post office. Growth spurred around this post office, as is common when post office’s were erected in the 18th and 19th centuries.
