Chesterfield, MO was originally referred to as “Gumbo Flats,” due to its soil. When wet, the city’s soil resembled gumbo.
The current site of the city is well-known for having been a well-populated Native American establishment. In fact, Native Americans are known to have been active in Chesterfield for at least 4,000 years.
Chesterfield was given its name by Justus Post, who arrived in Missouri in 1815. Despite moving to Illinois, Post’s name of “Chesterfield,” stuck.
