How Long Does a Bathroom Remodel Take?

Quality Bathroom Remodeling Takes Time

I’ve found that when working with my clients, one of the largest concerns is how long their bathroom remodel will take. It’s for this reason that some firms offer one-day bathroom remodeling services, in which an entire bathroom “remodel” is carried out in a single day.

I put “remodel” in parenthesis for good reason. These services that perform bathroom remodeling in a single day really carry out no remodeling whatsoever. Instead, they focus on painting and applying coatings, such as “refinishing” a bathtub using questionable “veneers” or applying a coat of paint to a vanity.

Funnily enough, these services cost a significant portion of, if not even more than a full bathroom remodel due to the “premium” of the time savings. My point is that in order to truly get the most value out of your money, I recommend embracing the duration that a bathroom remodel takes, as the result is truly worth the wait.

How Long Does Remodeling a Bathroom Take?

The answer to this question, of course, depends on the complexity of the project and the size of the bathroom. For this reason I can only speak in generalities. Please note that the following times are only for the intrusive remodeling phases, namely the demolition and installation phases of the project.

For a smaller, hallway-sized bathroom, you can expect a full, professional remodel to take 2-4 weeks.

For a large master bathroom, a full-renovation can take anywhere from 4-8 weeks depending on complexity.

How Long Does Each Phase Take?

The design phase is a highly subjective experience, as it depends on the bathroom designer and how quick they work, as well as project scope. I personally can complete a bathroom design within 1-2 weeks, although bear in mind that this does not include client meetings or the time spent waiting for said meetings. Depending on both contractor and client availability, it can take months until the design phase is finalized and materials are ready to be ordered.

Procurement & shipping takes me, on average, 8 weeks in order to fully receive all materials needed for the remodel due to manufacturing and shipping times. This time is mainly consumed by the time it takes for custom cabinetry to be crafted and shipped. Actual ordering of the materials can be done within a day once the design is finalized. Using stock cabinetry that is ready to ship can save time here.

Demolition can occur within a single day or two. It is one of the most visually impactful phases, as it reduces your bathroom to its bones in a very short amount of time.

Installation & cleanup follow the time frames mentioned above this section, where we mention that a remodel can take roughly a month, plus or minus a week or two depending upon the job.

It’s Getting Late, Let’s Conclude

Hopefully I have answered some of your bathroom remodeling questions in this article. Most bathroom remodeling projects take roughly a month, give or take a week or two. I highly recommend you go with a full bathroom remodel, rather than an expensive one-day “remodel” as you will get greater value out of your money.
